About

93

Close to an even split of each, the 2017 Cabernet Shiraz, which is always aged in the prior year’s Grange barrels, is a beauty, offering full-bodied, powerful notes of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, chocolate, toasted spices, and gravelly minerality. Deep, beautifully concentrated, and balanced, it has nicely integrated acidity, ripe yet present tannins, and, again, just terrific overall balance. It also builds beautifully with time in the glass and is a seriously good red blend from this team. Drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Product Description:

"Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds in known for.

Deep dense magenta. The very first impression? Instantly Penfolds. Some barrel-ferment nuances perhaps? A formic lift, volatile acidity, regressive oak? Maybe all listed are guilty partners! Higher notes reveal custard tart and brûlée, courting meaty juices. Yet beneath, a darker edge – black pudding, sweetbread, asphalt. Moreover, not just an ‘offal’ offering – an aromatic veil of satsuma plum, fig and quince paste aromatics liberally sprinkled above! Enticing, inviting. A taste continuum of assorted flavors and textures." -- Winery
