The 2017 Blacktail Proprietary Red Blend MMXVII is a blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Malbec, 23% Petite Sirah and 4% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little closed to begin, requiring some swirling to reveal a seducing perfume of lilacs, baked plums, blueberry pie and spice cake with hints of potpourri, unsmoked cigars and chocolate mint. The palate is medium to full-bodied and concentrated, but not in the least heavy, delivering layer upon layer of perfumed black fruits and a velvety texture, finishing fragrant and long, long, long. It is an exercise in polish and poise. 305 cases were made.

Xavier Cervantes founded his 1,100-acre ranch in this remote, vast blank canvas on the other side of Howell Mountain. Produced from vines planted in 1998, this is just the second vintage in production for this new estate. The inaugural 2016 blew my mind when I tasted it last year. I was almost frightened to taste the 2017s, including this newcomer label, knowing what a challenging year this was. It's literally a breath of fresh air. Of course, it doesn't hurt that top-tier winemaker Andy Erickson is in the cellar here.
