Dark purple. Deeply pitched aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, incense and vanilla are lifted by a peppery spice nuance and a suggestion of smoky minerals. Sweet, velvety and open-knit, with palate-staining dark fruit liqueur, rose pastille and mocha flavors given focus and spine by zesty acidity. Closes silky, energetic and extremely long, with harmonious tannins and suave echoes of sweet dark fruits and spicecake. There's surprising elegance here given the wine's opulence.

What a difference a year makes. Where the 2013 vintage of this wine is still gargantuan, this vintage—although certainly not lacking in power and richness—offers up much more than ripe fruit and oak. The red fruit is lifted and there's an autumnal feel about this wine: smoke, bramble bushes and dried leaves along with earthy beet-root and sanguine notes. It's still tightly wound, tannic and tangy but for all its brawn, there's grace there too. Drink now–2028 and likely well beyond.
