"Pale golden yellow. Wildflower aromas combine with guava, cinnamon and nut oils. The luscious tropical fruit flavors and bacony tang come across as lively rather than sweet. A succulent spatlese with fine length." (02/10)

"The Schonborn 2008 Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spatlese - from some of the estate's younger vines in that famous site, but in a prime location for ripening - smells extravagantly sweetly of gardenia and almost over-ripe peach; slathers the palate in honeyed glycerin-rich essence of peach, vanilla, and liquid floral perfume; and finishes with hints of peach kernel adding some counterpoint to the wine's sheer sweetness. This is not a 2008 characterized by dynamic interaction of flavors, but rather, emphasizes the soothing, caressing side of the vintage. it's quite lovely now even if a bit overly-sweet for my sense of balance, but I would expect it to have some magnificent moments over the next quarter century or more." Product Description:

Wine:
"Deep yellow fruits wedded to flamboyant spices and great acids. The 2008 shows initial signs of maturity as expected, but remains remarkably fresh and energetic to drink, light and bright as many 2008s happily are, and still in the middle of its evolution. One of the most successful of the library wines we've unearthed from Schonborn's magnificent cellars." - Importer

Vineyard:
"The site sits on the Rhine facing due south, and is composed of lush reddish, rock-strewn soil with a network of underground springs feeding and fertilizing it naturally." - Importer

Producer:
"This is the oldest estate in Germany under continuous family ownership: 27 generations spanning over 670 years. "No other estate in the Rheingau possesses such a bevy of fine vineyards as this highly traditional property in Hattenheim," writes Joel Payne. Indeed, their formidable holdings of 50ha in the Rheingau comprise choice parcels in 38 vineyards, which include virtually all of the top sites of the appellation. Most have been in the family's care since 1349; several fabulous sites, like the grand cru Erbacher Marcobrunn, were added in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ninety percent of the production is Riesling. Yields are exceptionally low and the best wines are aged in monumental 100-year-old casks." - Importer
