"The 1999 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is an introspective wine that appears to still be stuck in its adolescence. Over time the fruit begins to emerge, but only with great reluctance. This is a complex, broad-shouldered wine with tons of power and big tannins. Hints of dried roses, licorice and rich, expansive fruit saturate the palate on the finish. Readers cellaring the 1999 will need to be patient, but this is a magnificent wine that will be even more compelling as the tannins soften a bit more and the fruit fleshes out."
