2009 - Sartarelli Balciana Verdicchio
Sub Region Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jes
library code: 77208
From the Critics:
- "Vivid gold-tinged straw-yellow. Knockout nose of honeyed pineapple, mango juice, candied ginger, crushed stone and white pepper. Then rich and subtly sweet--almost fat--with a pliancy and texture more like an Alsatian wine than any Italian white. This round, full-bodied big boy boasts a very long, slowly mounting floral and honeyed finish with vibrant acids that keep it light on its feet. Not quite as opulent as some past Balciana wines (think 2006 or 2007, for example), but absolutely memorable. I really believe this single-vineyard wine is one of Italy's five or six best whites in its better vintages. It also ages well, usually still improving six to eight years after the vintage." - "The 2009 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Balciana is a bit more laid back than previous vintages. Sartarelli fans know the Balciana for its trademark exotic, lush personality, but sadly the wine found limited commercial acceptance, so the estate dialed back the late-harvest style. The 2009 has lovely textural polish and fabulous balance, but isn't the standout it has been in the past. Scents of white peaches, flowers and mint linger on the finish. Call me nostalgic, but I much prefer previous vintages of the Balciana." (02/13) -
