"Daniel Vollenweider aims to make very 'old school' Rieslings from his small plot of Schimbock, with the wines generally what would have been typical in the days when German 'hock' was one of the most popular white wines in the latter half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. Consequently, the wine sees a full 24 hours of skin contact after crushing to give the wine more of the hock style. This is also a later harvested wine that is also vinified essentially dry, with the 2008 Schimbock just over the legal limit for Trocken with its 12 g/l of residual sugar. The 2008 is a beautiful bottle of wine, as it offers up a deep and complex nose of grapefruit, tart orange, petrol, a touch of skin contact nuances, a wisp of yellow plum and a lovely base of soil. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very long, with excellent focus and balance, bright acids, lovely mid-palate depth, and a very long, refined finish that closes with great bounce and grip. Really a lovely bottle. 2011-2030."

"The 2008 Riesling Schimbock - for more about whose site consult my report in issue 183 - was still fermenting when I visited Vollenweider in September of 2009, and in the event missed by one gram its intended target for becoming officially trocken. White peach, apricot, and quince are wreathed in yeastiness in the nose but emerge lusciously on a creamily-textured palate, with faintly bitter notes of fruit pit and subtly saline and metaphorically crystalline mineral impingements offering welcome counterpoint. This is as nuanced and lip-smackingly delicious as any Schimbock bottling I have yet tasted; and I can well imagine it being worth following for the better part of a decade."
