Jeb Dunnuck - The Rhone Report
"Larger scaled and more concentrated and burly, the 2010 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz is thrilling stuff. A partially destemmed blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, where the Grenache is aged in cask and the Syrah in smaller burgundy barrels, it possesses a liquid mineral-like quality to go with ripe black fruits, graphite, licorice, and hints of leather on the nose. Full-bodied, powerful, and yet seamless, with a voluptuous texture, no hard edges, and building structure and tannin, this stunning wine will drink well for upwards of two decades. As opposed to the Reserve, which comes all from sandy soils, this cuvee comes all from pebble soils and consistently shows additional minerality, as well as a slightly more rustic feel than its sibling."

"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz, which is aged in both foudre and truncated oak vats, comes from two lieux-dits, Les Cassanets for the Grenache and Les Bedines for the Syrah. It reveals crushed raspberry and kirsch notes as well as a chalky stone-like character, but less of the Provencal roasted herb, lavender, and licorice notes than its siblings. Drink this dense, full-bodied, impressive 2010 over the next 15-20 years."
