About

Rating:

90+

"(Deiss's vines here include riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir, muscat, sylvaner and chasselas) Very pale, bright yellow. Pungently spicy, reduced nose shows an almost muscat-like lime oil element along with curry powder and pepper. Dense but penetrating, with a very suave texture considering the sharp definition to its citrus, spice and pepper flavors. This gives a sweeter, fatter impression than the 2006, and finishes longer and smoother. But still an infant." 90+ points - Stephen Tanzer - International Wine Cellar

WINE:
"The Engelgarten vineyard is a magnificent Graves terroir situated a cannon's shot from the medieval fortifications of Bergheim. Because of its gravelly structure and deficit of water in September, it is possible to consistently obtain a full maturity of the grapes when the yield is limited. The character of Engelgarten thus flowers and dominates the varietals: rare complexity, warm character, distinct aromatic personality of macerated citrus and cooked orange peel, and the balance between strength and finesse that are always the foundation of a great wine. (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Beurot, Muscat)." -Importer

WINERY:
"Jean-Michel Deiss is descended from a family of winegrowers who first settled Bergheim in 1744, and the grandson of Marcel Deiss, who founded the family winery in 1947. Jean-Michel was forced by circumstance to run his family estate, and unwillingly made to attend oenology school. Once he started producing his own wines, he set about rejecting most of what he had been taught and time and again finding his own path. Over the course of twenty-five years Jean-Michel has brought Domaine Marcel Deiss into its modern era, and become acknowledged as one of the greatest white wine producers in the world." -Importer
