"Deep cherry color with a garnet rim. A mature, distinguished bouquet offering layers of black fruit, cedar, spice, cigar box and leather. Medium-bodied on the palate with finely textured tannins, well-balanced acidity and rich, ripe fruit with notes of tobacco and vanilla adding complexity. Long, persistent finish." - Importer
"Bodegas Ondarre was founded in 1986. It belongs to the Bodegas Olarra Group, one of the most important names in Rioja. The bodega is located in Viana, a historic town 8 kilometres from Logroño in the heart of the Rioja region. The winery still preserves traces of its medieval fortress."
"Rioja is situated on a plateau of the Ebro Valley around 1500 feet above sea level. The soil is clay based with limestone and sandstone, although the high content of iron and chalk give the soil a reddish hue that may have given the region its name."
"Ondarre's vineyards lie in the Rioja Baja, Rioja Baja is strongly influenced by the Mediterranean climate making it the driest and warmest areas of Rioja. In fact, during the summer month drought can present serious problems even with the more recently permitted irrigation systems in place."
"Ondarre ferments each grape variety separately in temperature-controlled tanks. Maceration takes 16 to 18 days. After fermentation, the final blend is assembled and the wine matures for 16 months in American and French oak casks. The wine is racked four times as it ages in the barrels before being bottled where it ages a further two years." - Importer
