"Dveri-Pax (place of peace), is a Benedictine monastery dating back to the 12th century, in what is today Slovenia, but historically, as part of the Habsburg Empire was in an area known as Styria (or in German, Steiermark). Sauvignon Blanc has long been a favored varietal in the area, dating back to Archduke Johann (late 18th century), when it was known as Muscat Sylvaner, in German. Styria was the largest wine-growing region in the Habsburg Empire, at its peak. The re-incarnation of Devri-Pax as a winery is the work of Erich Krutzler, formerly winemaker at the famous Burgenland estate of Krutzler, known for its red wines. He is restoring the monastery, and 2003 was his first vintage. Soil here is classic fossilized limestone, the vineyards are very steep, and it is interesting to note that this area is about the same latitude as Sancerre." -Importer
