"I tasted the 2001 La Porte du Ciel and 2001 Clos des Truffieres ten days after bottling. As well as they were performing, they may be the finest wines Negly has yet produced. Made from 100% Syrah, there are 3,000 bottles of each cuvee. Both boast inky/purple colors along with extraordinary flavor intensity, full body, and layers of depth and texture. These magnificent offerings represent what can be achieved in the Languedoc-Roussillon, a region with which most consumers would never associate with wines of such grandeur and sumptuousness. They are the result of the extraordinary passion of oenologist Claude Gros, proprietor Jean Rosset, and wine broker Jeffrey Davies. I suspect the 2001s will outlive the 2000s given their slightly more vigorous acid profiles. My instincts suggest they should probably be consumed during their first 10-15 years of life, although they may last twice that long."
