Every now and then, the stars align and you get everything you want: In this case, a great producer, a once-in-a-lifetime vintage, and a lesser-known region add up to give you an absolutely outstanding bottle of wine at an unbeatable price.

Chateau De Segries

Over the past few decades, Chateau De Segries has gone through a dramatic transformation, becoming one of the most reliably fantastic value Southern Rhone value producers. Initially garnering praise for their Côtes du Rhône, this Grenache-focused blend from their Lirac estate is beginning to turn heads, too. And it's no wonder, as these guys have been rock solid in their quality standards. Wine Advocate has been raving about them for years:

"This estate has been on a qualitative hot streak for more than a decade, and this trio represents some of their attractive value-priced selections." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Issue #208, August 2013)

"A super value treasure trove in the southern Rhone" - Wine Advocate (#178, Aug. 2008)

A 98 Point Vintage to Remember

The second of two fantastic vintages, 2010 was a year of record-low yields, and record-high-quality fruit. Hot days and cool nights led to balanced fruit showing almost as ripe as 2009, but with better phenolics and tannins to counter. Many producers ended up picking their fruit late thanks to a combination of weather that allowed for the perfect conditions for slow-ripening fruit. Bottom line: This was a quality-over-quantity year for the region.

Yours for Less than $20

This Lirac offers intense spices from start to finish, layered over blueberries, cherries, and cassis - a veritable black-fruit salad. The tannins are well-managed, and refined, showing a structure that is not often seen in a Southern Rhône blend at this price point. This is the kind of wine that will go above and beyond any night of the week, but will dress up just as well as you do when company comes for dinner.
