2) - It's perfect for Thanksgiving - Put this on your table this year and your guests will be thanking you for years to come.  This full bodied, silky smooth Shiraz will without question shine.  It's flat out outstanding.  As the Wine Advocate notes "Very big, full and rich on the nose, it has a good backbone of very crisp and medium to firm rounded tannins to support, finishing with very long, lingering spice notes. Approachable now, it should drink best 2014 to 2024"

Wild Duck Creek has been a huge favorite of Wine Library customers for years, and today's release has proven to be one of the best deals in the history of this label!

"Australia's Victoria and Tasmania: Watch This Space" - LPB - WA
If there was one area to keep an eye out ... it might be this one.

From Master of Wine Lisa Perotti-Brown, her prophetic review of Victoria, Australia (where Wild Duck Creek sources its fruit).  She had this to say, “Victoria continues to be Australia’s center for innovation and experimentation. Home to some of the country’s brightest young winemaking talents, I am repeatedly impressed not just with the overall quality of wines coming out of this region, but the individual expressions. This vast region has much to offer in terms of incredibly diverse terroirs, including patches capable of producing wines that reach the absolute pinnacles of greatness. But such vineyards can malinger into insignificance unless they are managed by people with real vision. It is this combination of incredible viticultural potential and the dedication of inspired winemakers that continues to make this region Australia’s region to watch….Some outstanding wines were produced across Victoria in 2010…yields were generally down producing rich, concentrated wines with a lot of character. Yarra Yering in the Yarra Valley commented, “Vintage 2010 is fast garnering a reputation throughout the land as one of the most outstanding produced in southern Australia in recent years”  Wow!

The Critics have spoken.

Every single vintage of this wine has earned a 90+ point score from Robert Parker's the Wine Advocate.  Every.  Single.  One.

This wine has earned outstanding press for years.  This year is no different.  The first vintage that Robert Parker himself rated was all the way back in 1997 and he scored the wine 93 Points.  Since then, this wine has earned 90+ scores vintage after vintage.  Take a look at the notes on this wine below

"Deep purple-black colored, the 2010 Springflat Shiraz is a little closed on the nose at this stage, offering subtle aromas of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves, mulberries and spice cake with hints of anise, vanilla and chocolate covered dates. Very big, full and rich on the nose, it has a good backbone of very crisp and medium to firm rounded tannins to support, finishing with very long, lingering spice notes. Approachable now, it should drink best 2014 to 2024+. ”

In addition, James Halliday’s 93 point review emphasizes the wine’s showboating personality: The '10 vintage allowed the heroic style of Wild Duck Creek free rein; there are multiple layers of black fruits, licorice and mocha/fruitcake flavours on the mid-palate

Cult Wine revealed!
It all started with a 99 Point score by Robert Parker back in 1997

Wild Duck Creek Estate is one of those cult wineries in Australia, based outside of Melbourne, that achieved much of its acclaim due to a mixture of excellent winemaking techniques (vinification is entirely effected through manual pressing), a winemaker with a keen sense of good wine (David knows and deeply loves his vines), and of course, that Robert Parker 99-pointer for their flagship "Duck Muck" in the '97 vintage.
Back then, Robert Parker issued a 93 Point score to the 1997 vintage of the very same wine we are offering today and remarked "The spectacular, opaque purple-colored 1997 Springflat Shiraz is unevolved, but possesses great intensity and promise. Tasting akin to a barrel sample with its flashy display of youthful cassis and blackberry fruit, this thick, rich offering possesses definition that is rare in a wine of such size and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018."
We wish we had some of that to taste now!

Artisanal Winery Credentials!!!
There is so much history here.  All in all, this is one of our favorite estates in Australia for so many reasons.  If it's been a while since you have explored some of the top wineries in Australia, today is a great opportunity to jump back in.

"We are a small family-run winery situated 8km west of Heathcote, alongside the Wild Duck Creek. David (aka ‘Duck’) and Diana planted the first vines in 1974 and in 1979 named the first vineyard Alan’s Cabernet Vineyard, after Duck’s late father Alan. The Original Vineyard was planted in 1988 on land owned by Diana’s parents. Duck and Diana have three children – Liam, Ngaire and Bridie. Traditional winemaking methods including hand-picking, open fermentation, hand-plunging, basket-pressing, and long-term barrel-ageing are fostered, as is the use of biodynamic principles on our own vineyards. Duck remains adamant however, that it’s still the vineyard and site selection especially, that dictate great wines. Second-generation winemaking has flourished for more than a decade through Liam, whose methodical yet innovative approaches merge fantastically with Duck’s eccentricity – a humorous and brilliant concoction! Our passion is to produce extraordinary wines of balance and power that enrich and delight the senses.

Prior to deciding which wines will ultimately be made each vintage, Duck and Liam analyze their fruity concoctions so as to make the best Springflat Shiraz possible. The uniqueness of this wine results from parcels of fruit being sourced from eight other sites across the Heathcote region, stretching from Colbinnabbin to Mia Mia. These vineyards are living in various soil types ranging from the rich ‘cambrian’ volcanic soils of the north, to the dense, acidic, granite and quartz-laden clays of the south. This allows the Springflat Shiraz to express a rainbow of richness for which the Heathcote region is famous." - winery
