The World-Class Pinot Noir You're Not Drinking

When it’s warm out and you’re eating more fresh fruit than fried foie, the idea of a gigantic, tannic, high-alcohol red can be off-putting. But it can’t be all rosé and Pinot Grigio all summer. You need some complexity in your life. You need something to go with that lovingly-prepared miso-glazed salmon. You need Pinot Noir.

Now we love Pinot from the Willamette Valley. We love Pinot from the Russian River Valley. We really love Burgundy. But on a hot summer day, we have a different suggestion for you: Australian Pinot Noir. Specifically from Victoria. The area around Melbourne is kept cool through a combination of altitude and proximity to the sea, and is just perfect for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. And the best part? These Pinots are shockingly affordable. Take a look below to see what you've been missing.

2011 Yering Station Little Yering Pinot Noir

Soft and light, with gentle hints of stem underneath bright red fruit. This is the epitome of Pinot by the Pool.

2013 Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir

An effusive and charismatic Pinot, the Innocent Bystander is probably the biggest of the three here, but it’s still not going to overwhelm your beet and goat cheese salad. Cherry and light black fruit notes are accented by just a hint of cola. Tuesday night wine at its best!

2012 Route Du Van Pinot Noir

This might actually be one of the coolest deals we have on the site all summer. This is a blend of Pinot from all over Victoria (Yarra Valley, King Valley and Heathcote) that shows a really impressive restraint and nuance for a $17 Pinot Noir. The guys at Route Du Van are pretty explicit that they want to make wine that is nothing like heavy, oaky Shiraz that people normally associate with Shiraz. This is a cool, mellow, floral, pure Pinot for someone who wants a glass of red even though it’s hot outside. We can’t recommend this wine enough!
