The Critics Agree: This is a spectacular wine!!
Huge scores from Wine and Spirits, Stephen Tanzer and the Wine Spectator

Often, you will find wines that have earned excellent press from one particular critic. In this case, this wine has earned outstanding praise from 3 of the major critics here in the US. Take a look below and see why we are so excited about this deal!

"Victoria Benavides founded Elias Mora in 2000. With 17.6 acres of vines, most of them near the medieval town of San Roman de Hornija, she makes this red from 20-year-old vines. This wine's red fruit clarity and soft notes of tea leaves make it a sophisticated Toro. The structure is vertical, supported by firm, razor-sharp tannins, all surrounded by delicious flavors of ripe raspberries and scents of flowers." - 93 Points Wine and Spirits

"Dark ruby. Fresh, assertively perfumed aromas of cherry, red berry liqueur, peppery spices and minerals, with smoke and vanilla nuances adding complexity. Fleshy and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering juicy raspberry and bitter cherry and flavors and a touch of coconutty oak. The spicy quality comes back strong on the finish, which clings with strong tenacity and slow-building tannin" - 91 Points Stephen Tanzer

"Earthy and tarry notes lend a sanguine character to this powerful red, with a core of plum, currant and bitter chocolate imparting balance. The texture is dense and polished, featuring well-integrated tannins and a juicy finish. Drink now through 2022." - 90 Points Wine Spectator

Background on why this is one of the true Superstars of Spain
If you haven't tried wine from Elias Mora yet, now is the time

"Since 2000, the winery has been managed by the oenologist Victoria Benavides. The winery takes its name from the previous owner of these prestigious vineyards, namely Señor Elias Mora.

Our ethos is to marry the past with the present, combining the valuable knowledge of previous generations [she started the project by hanging out in the one bar in town asking elder patrons where the best grapes were grown and following their leads] with the best aspects of modern technology and all that it implies. To sum it up, our philosophy could be well described as: the winery at the heart of the vineyard and barrels at the heart of the wine. Out of respect for the environment we only use natural products for our wines: oak, natural cork and glass.
Situated between the Duero and Hornija rivers, the soil is comprised of large pebbles over a bed of Pliocene limestone, which is low in organic content. The extreme continental climate compounded with the scarcity of rainfall (400 mm /year) improves the quality of the Tinta de Toro grape.

The grapes come from a selection from the Los Pajaros and La Veleta vineyards planted in San Roman de Hornija. The vineyards average 20 years of age and have limestone clay soils with large rocks on the surface. Yields average 3500kg/ha and only 25hl/ha at pressing. Grapes were sorted twice, once during harvest by hand and again at the winery. The grapes saw a 1 day cold soak with Alcoholic (7 days) and ML (21 days) taking place in stainless steel tank. The wine was then aged for 6 months in 100% new American oak barrels. The wine was clarified with egg whites before bottling." - winery
