Happy Oyster Day! Like all of these days, we’re never really sure which governing body certifies August fifth to be the official day of our favorite bivalves, but we’re not here to question. We’re just here to talk about wine! Now of course anybody could rattle off a laundry list of Muscadets and Sancerres as the de rigueur choice for something like this, but we literally have a while building full of wine, so let’s get weird with it. Yeah?

2013 La Reine Juliette Picpoul

The muscadet of the south

Oyster pairing: Gildden Point

Situated beach-side on the edge of the Thau Lagoon this bright, briny Picpoul is a great match for northern-Atlantic oysters like Maine’s Gildden Point.

2012 Le Meurger Bourgogne Blanc

Chablis on a budget

Oyster pairing: European Flats

You don’t need to drop major dollars to find superlative white Bungundy. Take the money you saved and blow it on some rare Ostrea Edulis so you can enjoy the complexity of the oyster as it mingles with this wine’s combination of citrus and light nutty notes.

2014 Barton & Guestier (B&G Passporte) Bordeaux White

Not a Sancerre

Oyster pairing: Olympia Oyster

Floral, fruity, and low-fuss, this white Bordeaux is a great universal oyster wine, but for today, we’re thinking it would be a killer accompaniment to a dozen Olympias with their clean, aromatic vegetal notes and creamy finish.

2013 Neighbor Sauvignon Blanc

Chunky wine for chunky oysters

Oyster pairing: Miyagi

Since it’s blended with a little Semillion for additional body, The Neighbor is absolutely perfect for rich, luxurious oysters like the Royal Miyagi.
