This visit is making me hungry.

Chef Lizette shows me photos from her recent cooking show, in which she prepared meals to pair with several wines from Wine Library. She starts with a simply scrumptious pairing of the Neighbor Sauvignon Blanc with homemade hummus and crudites.

It’s just the first course, and it only gets better.

We sample through some amazing wines that are perfect for the holiday table. The Neighbor Red Blend offers a delicious bundle of beets, cranberries, earthiness - mmm...sounds like Thanksgiving to me! I’m already starting to pin recipes and plan out the week before the big day, so I am thrilled to get a sneak peek of Lizette’s pairing recommendations.

I am also thrilled to have the opportunity to taste with a chef. With her extensive knowledge of cooking, she is able to identify in wines notes that sometimes escape me, spices I don’t use often in the kitchen or fruits I enjoy but don't often stop to really think about. What does a cranberry actually taste like?

Then Lizette really goes to work. She lays out a spread of condiments, cheeses, cured meats, and crackers (all from our Gourmet Department). She pours balsamic vinegar and oil in little sample cups. She unplugs and digs in. I wondering about the method to this madness, but I also know some winemakers work kind of like this when making blends. It really isn’t so far away, this combining of ingredients, like blending component wines, finding the right combination so that everything fits just so.  I’m getting a little nervous, watching all this seemingly unguided action and then she hands me a loaded cracker. I take a taste... and I am blown away.

We keep going like this for a while (I have a really tough job). Then Giovanni (an amazing wine consultant and buyer here at the shop) jumps in the game and is like, wait, wouldn’t this cheese-cracker-salami-hummus quartet pair better with this wine? And Lizette is like, hold up, let me try that, and OMG! Blow my mind this is delicious.

I’m so excited to have Chef Lizette back in the store on Sunday, November 15, for two back-to-back seminars, in-store and streaming live.
