'Tuesday night wine'...'Cellar defender'...'Crowd Pleaser'...'QPR'..terms so ubiquitous in the language of wine-sales-speak (official title) that its mere mention brings on pangs of irreversible nausea. Ignore the fact that yes, the words do have meaning and moreso, significance to the consumer, still. Disregard the reality that these terms made it cool to trade-down, particularly in the wake of a busted economy, circa 2008. What these terms really convey is that you can (and should) drink more often, and spend less. A cool thought, however the point is not to drink more crates of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay or Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, but to spider out and discover the magic of Chards from Western Australia to Petit Chablis, or hit up the whites of Friuli or Campania, all havens for solid quality on a budget. With the amount of wine I drink, and my expectations of quality and intrigue, I is really important that I find outrageous value AND excitement.
