Despite a great reputation for quality, Brunello di Montalcino has always fallen just short of stardom. The 2010 vintage, one of impeccable growing conditions, may change that forever. Brunello is about to blow up.

The Place

A relatively young appellation, Brunello de Montalicino only achieved DOCG status in 1980. It's history dates almost 100 years before that, to when Ferruccio Biondi Santi came up with the general formula that would go on to become modern day Brunello. Since the 1888 harvest, Brunello di Montalcino has become an icon of quality in the wider Tuscany region. The DOCG requires that the wine be made of 100 percent Sangiovese, and spend at least two years in oak before bottling. In total, a full 50 months is required before release, between cask and bottle.

The Year

2010 was the perfect vintage. Just enough sun, just enough overnight cooling, and a long growing season promoted even ripening, and a perfect balance between acid, sugar, and phenolics. The results are spellbinding, and many of the wines exude copious amounts of character and complexity, as well as tremendous depth, richness, and texture. Not only do these wines express the great terroir of this mountainous area, but the purity and greatness of Sangiovese. Simply put, this is the most complete Brunello vintage that you will ever find.

Check out these can't miss selections.

2010 Ciacci Piccolomini Brunello Di Montalcino

Ciacci has been a very hot name this year, and this is an exceptional value as well! This is a great wine to open now as it’s approachable and really showcases the vintage perfectly.

2010 La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino

This is one of our best selling Brunello producers of all time, and their 2010 is easily their best yet. This wine is an outstanding value to lay down as well. Give it a few years, and you will be well rewarded.

2010 Poggio Antico Brunello Di Montalcino

Another great example of what this vintage is all about as well. This traditionally made Brunello shows the wonderful savory side of Brunello, as well as the power and fruit powerful of this truly remarkable vintage.
