Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain.

Smells of sweet corn, buttered popcorn and pistachio nuts in the early stages; later whiffs pick up well-endowed scents of sauteed butter, oaky vanilla, beeswax and linseed oil. Palate entry is full-bodied, sweet and honeyed; at midpalate the taste profile turns drier, more intensely grainy-mashy and breakfast cereal-like. Finishes with notes of nougat, almonds, candy bar, and oak. Best Buy.

Aromatic citrus wafts from the glass, as Creamsicle, orange peel, and green tea with lemon emerge. Honey Nut Cheerios, ripe strawberries, and a zing of tangy raspberry make the nose that much more enticing. Some cinnamon heat on the creamy palate, but it’s tempered wonderfully by strawberries and cream, vanilla frosting, and strawberry-rhubarb jam. The finish is rife with confectioner’s sugar and more warming spice.

Aromas and flavors of apricot preserves, pickled raspberry and tart red cherry, plum sauce, and crispy duck skin in orange sauce with a round, tangy, dry medium-to-full body and a warming, very complex, very long finish with notes of maitake mushroom in an apricot bramble berry reduction, sesame and plum sauce crispy salmon crack, mincemeat pie and pralines, and artisan cola. Savory, almost meaty and then layered with red berries, citrus, and flaky pastries with tropical fruit confections; this one goes deep into the vault and delivers a king’s fortune of flavor and gratification.

Solera vat blended after aging in a combination of sherry, bourbon, and new oak casks. Very sherried on the nose at first, with candle wax, old barrel char, and baked berries. The palate is notably smooth and flavorful, the bourbon cask notes chime in with vanilla and baking spice, and the new oak gives subtle spine and grip. Light in ABV, but that only adds to its delicate charms.
