Austrian Wines: The 2015 Vintage

2015 is already shaping up to be an epic vintage for dry Austrian white wines.

As The Wine Advocate's Austrian wine reviewer Stephan Reinhardt writes

Although the vintage was very warm and very dry, the wines are of outstanding quality. The fruit is ripe and aromatic, and the palate is round and intense, but by no means fat or alcoholic. Due to the coolish nights in autumn, the acidity is vibrant, and the wines are so pure and salty.

The Austrian Wine Marketing Board agrees,

Austrian winegrowers and devotées of their wines can find plenty to be glad about in the 2015 vintage. Wines already tasted are impressive for their deep and ripe fruit, complex aromatics and sense of equilibrium, while wines still maturing in the cellars nurture expectations of top class and great potential. Winegrowing regions endured significant hail damage only in very isolated instances. The 2015 vintage leaves no doubt: very promising!

Weingut Nigl, a top Austrian estate, describes the vintage as

Perfect for making mature and full-flavoured wines that feature the typical characteristics of each grape variety. Ripe, but not overripe, with a nice balance between fruit and acidity.

Weingut Brundlmayer's 2015 Harvest Diary entries have titles like Wonderful Harvesting Days and Best Harvest Conditions So Far!

Bottom line: Austrian wine lovers and wine lovers in general, this is a vintage not to be missed!
