"The 2010 Chianti Classico is superb. Dark red cherries, mint, spices and licorice are some of the many notes that emerge from this beautifully delineated, energetic Chianti Classico. In the style of the year, the tannins are quite firm, yet also serve to give the wine much of its energy. I would not be surprised to see the 2010 age gracefully for many, many years. Best of all, it is a ridiculous value. The estate's Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino, aged in a combination of barriques and tonneaux." (07/12)

"(a blend of 90% sangiovese, 5% canaiolo nero and 5% colorino): Dark red. Bright, perfumed aromas of redcurrant, flint and violet. Fresh and lively in the mouth, with flavors similar to the aromas. The juicy, long finish features polished tannins and a repeating violet note. This Chianti will likely age very well." (09/12)

"Rocca di Castagnoli makes this Chianti Classico from its own estate clones. The nose is still a bit closed but reveals dark cherry and earthy undertones. The palate is more expressive, showing ripe black-cherry and eucalyptus flavor, laced with pepper and clove accents. Bracing tannins and bright acidity need time to mellow. Drink 2016-2022. -K.O." "Very sangiovese, this is a lush, sour cherry–scented wine. The cool fruit lasts, while the tannins are gentle, airy and approachable. A friendly red to pour with a steak." (04/13)

Product Description:

WINERY:
"The first cultivations around the farm of Rocca di Castagnoli date back to the Etruscan period. Instead, the historic and cultural roots of the village of Castagnoli are embedded in the high Middle Ages: a series of documents of the register of Coltibuono marks the sale of a farm, with wine and olive growing, in 940 A.D. under the domain of Otto IV. Three centuries later, in 1203, Castagnoli becomes pat of the Florentine territory in the Lega del Chianti, under the municipality of Gaiole. These years are decidedly riotous: what today appears as a peaceful serene haven, was once an area of harsh and cruel battles."

"In the eighteenth century, under the guidance of the Tempi family, Castagnoli is one of the most celebrated estates of the area, as is testified by the compliments of the Grand duke Pietro Leopoldo who, in 1773, on a visit to the Chianti area, boasts its illuminated management, underlining the excellent state of the farms and the excellent living conditions of the farmers. At the end of the nineteenth century, with the extinction of the Tempi family, Castagnoli passes to the Ricasoli. In 1924 the Rocca di Castagnoli farm, together with the most celebrated farms of the area, founds the Consortium of the Classic Chianti wine. Naturally, much has changed since then: since 1981, the year in which the current ownership settled in, important restoration work has been carried out on the villa and the fortress. Many modern working criteria have also been introduced in the vines and cellar. A modern wine-making cellar has been designed and built, while the cellars of the famous medieval fortress have been used to age wine in wood." -Winery

VINIFICATION:
"Maceration without stalks is performed at a controlled temperature of 28°C for 10-12 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in steel vats. Maturation of at least 15 months follows, managed partly in oak casks and partly in tonneaux. The wine is blended in stainless steel vats. Very wide filtration is applied at the bottling stage, which is followed by ageing in glass for at least 6 months." -WInery
