"A blend of syrah and carinena, this has the muscle tone of a marathon runner, its flavors of ripe berry and cherry filling the palate with grace. Air reveals an earthy, spicy finish. Try it with duck in a sweet sauce." -90 points Wine & Spirits

"Venus La Universal is the creation of young and super-talented enologist Sara Pérez, the driving force behind Mas Martinet in Priorat, and Dominio de Bibei in Galicia. Sara’s father Luis was, along with René Barbier, the driving force behind the emergence of Priorato twenty years ago. Venus' debut vintage was a stunning 1999, quickly guaranteeing the new Denominacion de Origen 'Montsant' a serious place in the Spanish wine scene in 2001."

"Tiny quantities of two different wines come from a number of schist & granite composed parcels around the village of Falset at altitudes between 300-700 meters above sea level, often steeply terraced, all enjoying a warm, Mediterranean climate with dramatic day/night temperature shifts. Today Sara has joined forces with her husband René Barbier Jr. to form an unbeatable duo with talent and experience, to bring their parents' work full circle."

"The vines are 10-70 years old and the vineyards are schist, clay & calcareous, with south-south east exposure. The wine is harvested around mid September. All of the vineyard sites are farmed organically and located within a 5km radio of the southern Montsant D.O, but with subtle differences in climatic influences and soils."

"Following carefully hand selection, fermentation occurs in open 500 L barrels at 29-32ºC, wood vats and concrete tanks. The maceration lasts for about 32 days. After press, the wine enters into French barrels of 300 L, 20% new. Every year the elevage time varies, but it normally between 18 and 24 months." -Winery

WINEMAKER
"Pérez makes wine at Clos Martinet, which her father founded in 1992, at Cims de Porrera, in conjunction with a local cooperative, and with Los Ocho, a group of eight young friends. She also produces Venus and Eneas, muscular red blends from the Montsant region where Laurona is based. She's keenly attuned to the history embedded in the abandoned vineyard terraces that mark Priorat's steep hills, and in the character of the old men whose ancient vineyards supply the grapes for Cims de Porrera." -2003 Wine Spectator article: Click here to see the full article (You may need to be a subscriber).
