"The 2003 Sagrantino di Montefalco is a big, strapping wine. It reveals a super-opulent expression of dark fruit, smoke, herbs and game. This intense, mouth-filling wine needs some time to soften, but it offers plenty of potential in an intense style. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018." -90 points- Antonio Galloni- Wine Advocate
WINE:
"Winemaking at Martinelli is characterized by a meticulous focus on the Sagrantino grape and uncompromising attention to detail. The winery itself is an architectural gem, marrying simple, traditional methods with the latest in modern winemaking techniques and technology. To ensure the best quality fruit, yields are kept very low (2.23 tons per acre), the vines are carefully cropped and picked by hand, and only the best bunches are selected in the cellar. The wine spends 30 months aging, with several months in French barriques and a minimum of 1 year bottle aging." -Importer
VARIETAL:
"Sagrantino, lively, and sometimes tannic red grape variety grown in Umbria in central Italy, particularly in the Montefalco area. Sagrantino di Montefalco was elevated to DOCG status in the mid 1990s. Sagrantino has been used as an ingredient in dried grape wines but today shows promise as a carefully vinified dry red, sometimes blended with Sangiovese." -Jancis Robinson, the Oxford Companion to Wine
