Delicious Spanish White... 100% Xarel-lo Xarel-lo is one of the primary grapes used to make Cava, the sparkling wine from Spain. This varietal (pronounced "Charrel Low") is native to the regions of Catalonia and Penendes in Northeastern Spain. Castel Roig makes a delightful Cava. Their enologist Marcel Sabate has been one of very few producers committed to making a still wine from 100% Xarel-lo... and with his success, others are sure to follow his lead. The 2005 vintage was a big hit, and we just received the 2006 vintage, scored 90 points by Jay Miller in yesterday's new issue of Wine Advocate. When we tasted the 2006 a few weeks ago, we were floored by it. The wine possesses impressive weight on the palate (a result of 6 months aging on its lees) and the minerality of a great Sancerre. Redolent of green apple and pear, this is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys other Spanish whites like Albarino or Godello (or Cava!), but also for Sancerre fans. Really delivers for the money.
