Not only that, it's a Rioja Reserva ... from the brilliant 2001 vintage ... for just $14.98 per bottle!!!
90 WS, 90 WA, 90 IWC. A brilliant QPR from Spain. Rioja lovers, grab this while you can!
The reviews speak for themselves here. It's rare that we can find a wine that has this much in common with this many of the major publications out there. Take a look at some of these notes!
"A
ringer for a Rioja twice the price, this all-Tempranillo wine comes from low-yielding, nearly 40-year-old vines in the far northwest of the region at a cooling altitude. Juicy, richly layered and subtle, the Reserva's fine tannins and overall harmony reflect its 24 months in small oak barrels and a further year aging in the bottle." -
Forbes Magazine (Feb 26th - Forbes.com - Richard Nalley)
"Fresh, firm and long. This balanced red offers crisp cherry, cola, vanilla, tobacco and fresh herb flavors, supported by well-integrated tannins that give way to a spicy, floral finish" -
90 Points - Wine Spectator
"Juicy strawberry and dried cherry flavors are gently supported by tangy minerals and framed by soft tannins ... Fully mature and delicious" -
90 Points - IWC
More about this winery: Labastida is a beautiful old village in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, in the Alavesa district of Rioja, northwest of the city of Haro. Here Tempranillo achieves particular power and intensity and the handful of growers in and around the village have taken ownership of a winery where they produce the wines of Castillo Labastida from their own grapes. The winery is handsomely old fashioned on the outside and up-to-date within. The young winemaker, Manuel Ruiz, is highly skilled and also has the good fortune to have grown up as the son and student of the foremost scholar-enologist in Rioja.
More about this wine:Made from 100% Tempranillo from vines over 30 years of age. Though the legal definition of "Reserva" in the region of Rioja requires 3 years of aging, with a minimum of just one year in barrel, this wine spends 24 months in barriques, and achieves a complete integration of the flavors of grape and wood, plus the mellowness that only time can provide.
