Ian Dorin2006 Camerano Barbera D'alba
I want to share my Italian red wine best buy with everyone. As a buyer for the store, I get to taste an incredible amount of wine over the span of a year. Something special happened between the first and last time I tried this, and bought every bottle that was left.
I want to share this discovery with all of you! This is classic wine making at it's finest. Grow great fruit, don't "over-do-it" in the winery, and let the grapes do the talking. The last year has been very good to this exceptional Barbera as it now it loaded with complex fruit and earth flavors and has the staying power to last another 10 years.
Dennis Bulluck2006 Chateau Montviel
The 2006 Chateau Montviel is an elegant Pomerol, with rich black cherry flavors and silky, smoky tannins on the finish. This wine will easily last 15+ years, but it is quite enjoyable now. This wine merits a "D. B." B+
Kristen Murphy2003 Poesia
As the weather gets cooler, I've been moving back to enjoying more reds. I was definitely impressed with this effort from Argentina. This New World wine had a lot of class and finesse, showing great complexity. A delicious effort, the Poesia had great rustic notes of leather and herbs, as well as some good dark fruit. There were good structure from the tannins and the finish on this lasted quite awhile. Excellent wine for these cool autumn days and can pair with a variety of hearty meals.
Jim Gorman2007 Puig Parahy George
I had this wine on 2 occasions now and it rocks! I thought, due to its youth, that it would be pretty closed up, but it's actually drinking very well right now. The Carignan brought out smoky and earthy tones in this wine. This wine is a definite try for all those Cotes du Rhone lovers and I can see it gaining more depth in the next few years.
Frank Rhien2001 Labastida Castillo Rioja Reserva
This wine has really nice red fruit of cherry, with a good dose of herbs and cocoa, and some great spice on the finish. The Labastida Rioja is a very smooth wine. Also, 2001 was an incredible year in Rioja and definitely a great bang for your buck!
Aaron Malcomnson2007 Madonna Alta Pinot Noir
One of the few Italian Pinot Noirs I have tried in my time as a wine enthusiast. That being said, I felt the wine had the three "S's." Softness, Silkiness, and Sexiness! Subtle cherry notes with great fresh expression. Relaxed tannins and a lengthy finish, super for it's price point. One of the most difficult varietals to find true value in, but this wine smashes that stereotype. A great Umbrian Pinot that drinks way above it's price point...who knew?!
Julius Lasoff2005 Vega Escal Priorat
For fans of full-bodied cabs, this one's for you. Ripe black cherry and blueberry, with notes of licorice, tobacco leaf and toasty oak. The Vega Escal will pair well with robust dishes. Drinking nicely now with room to develop over the next few years.
